Teaching Experience

I began my teaching career in 3rd grade and spent three years there. I then looped up to 4th grade with my last 3rd grade class and spent two years teaching 4th grade. I then transitioned to 2nd grade and taught that grade level for one year. After that year, I transitioned out of the classroom to become a dyslexia therapist and I love it so much!

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I decided to become a CALT because I want to help the students I once was. I was diagnosed dyslexic at the age of 7 and it changed my life. I wish someone could have helped me better understand what dyslexia was and how it was going to impact my life. I now can be that person for all the students I work with. I can help them not just improve their academic skills, but also help them with the way the see themselves and the dreams they want to accomplish. For me, becoming a CALT is so much more than helping students with their reading. It’s about helping these students become the best version of themselves.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moments working with dyslexic students have been when they start to believe they are capable and they start to see their success. They truly transform to a new person because they are reaching their goals and see their hard work paying off. It is truly some of the best moments I have with my students.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal when working with a dyslexic student is to not only help them with their reading, but also help them get a good understanding of what dyslexia is. I want to help them build confidence in their academic skills and in themselves. The goal is to help them to find the joy in academics, themselves, and in life, though they have something that is going to challenge them each and every day.

Your teaching style, personality?

My teaching style is a mix of fun and structure. I want to build a trusting relationship with your student so I can understand how they learn best. I like to have your students input throughout the lesson and joke with them occasionally to keep it light. Knowing there is a goal to reach, I encourage your student to give me their best effort for each and every lesson. I will also use positive reinforcement to further engage and motivate them through the lessons. Your students learning style is what drives my teaching style.

Any family details?

I have a 5 year old Mini Australian Shepheard named George. He is my heart and soul and I take him with me every opportunity I get.

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

As someone who is dyslexic and has been through the same struggles, I get it. I know how it can feel and I am here to help your student through it. Being dyslexic is just something that is apart of us but does not define us. I feel that being a Dyslexia Therapist is truly my calling and I am so excited to get started. I hope I get to work with you soon!
