Teaching Experience

I am currently getting a second masters degree to become a Diagnostician in Special Education. Previously, I have been a Reading Specialist with the surrounding school districts. I just completed my 15th year of teaching! I have been trained in other dyslexia programs, however, I recently decided to become trained in Take Flight as well. This past January, I opened my own dyslexia and reading intervention practice where I see students in person as well as seeing students online through Dyslexia on Demand.

Professional Affiliations

I am a member of Academic Language Therapy Association.

Programs Trained In

Currently I am trained in the Wilson Reading System, Take Flight and Preflight.

Age Range You Feel Most Comfortable With:
I am comfortable working with all students 2nd grade-12th grade.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I decided to become a CALT when my oldest son was diagnosed with Dyslexia. He wasn’t receiving the appropriate intervention for his dyslexia and I knew it was up to me to find what worked for him.
As an adult with Dyslexia myself, I understand how a student feels to struggle as well as when a student feels successful. I truly believe I was gifted with Dyslexia to help others achieve academic excellence in all areas of reading.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

I had a little girl who was struggling in her school intervention program and just felt defeated. Once we started working together she said, “I had no idea that it could be this easy. I love you!” That moment changed everything for me. I just knew this was my life calling and how I just wanted to increase this same feeling with all my students.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal with helping students who struggle with dyslexia is to help them foster a love of reading and learning. Building a strong relationship with my students is paramount to a child’s success. I want all my students to know I believe in them 100% and that I know they can do anything they want to achieve!

Your teaching style, personality?

My students end up being one of my “kids” for life! Fostering a strong relationship is so important to their success. Knowing that I am in their corner just like you, their parent is, which allows them to feel supported. Teaching the Take Flight with fidelity is vital but allowing customization to meet the needs of my students is what matters most. I am not wanting to just “check a box” but do what each of these students need the most!
