CALT
Why did you decide to become a CALT?
Helping struggling readers has always been close to my heart, but it became personal when my son was identified as dyslexic in fourth grade. Seeing how the right support completely changed his confidence and success inspired me to help other students and families experience that same growth. I also love learning and growing as an educator, so I can continue to better support students on their reading journey.
Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?
There have been many memorable moments, but one stands out. I’ve been working with a fourth-grade student who began our time together with very little confidence and had never felt successful at reading. Today, he is excited about reading and even asks to come to my room just to read to me. He eagerly visits the library and checks out books he can read independently. Seeing his confidence grow and the joy on his face is truly priceless and reminds me why this work is so rewarding.
Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?
My goal is to help students with dyslexia feel successful, confident, and capable. I strive to make a meaningful impact not only on their academic growth but also on their emotional well-being by building self-esteem, resilience, and to believe in themselves.
Your teaching style, personality?
My teaching style is energetic, patient, kind, and empathetic. I tailor instruction to meet each student’s unique learning needs while creating a supportive and encouraging environment. I hope that students not only grow as readers but also enjoy the process of learning.
Any family details?
Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have been married for 29 years and the proud parent of three children-two sons and one daughter. My oldest, Blake, is a graduate of Texas A&M. My middle son graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, where he also played baseball, and my youngest, Kathryn, is currently a sophomore at Texas A&M. I also have three dogs, and we enjoy taking afternoon walks together. In my free time, I love playing pickleball, spending time with family and friends, and recently discovered a creative outlet in painting banners for special occasions.
Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?
I look forward to partnering with students and families as they begin a new learning adventure and supporting each learner as they grow in confidence, skill, and success.
