Why did you decide to become a CALT?
As a classroom teacher, I loved helping students connect with books they would like and develop a genuine love of reading. Over time, as I worked with more students who found reading challenging, especially those with dyslexia, I realized that while I could encourage a love of reading, that alone wasn’t enough if the instruction itself wasn’t accessible. When I realized that the tools and strategies that I had weren’t meeting ALL of my students’ needs, I knew I needed to learn more to expand my knowledge and approach. I began to ask more questions, seek out our campus dyslexia therapist, and adapt and refine my instructional approach. As I began to see progress with students, I wanted to know even more, and with the encouragement of our campus dyslexia therapist, I applied to begin my master's program and enrolled in a CALT training program.
Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?
My favorite moments in working with dyslexic students are when they begin to recognize their own capabilities and gain confidence in their "I can..." vs. "I can't...". As they persist through productive struggle, I love seeing uncertainty gradually shift into confidence as skills start to click into place, helping them become more automatic as they gain tools that make reading accessible and workable for them.
Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?
My goal in working with students with dyslexia is to help them become confident, capable readers by giving them clear, structured tools for reading and spelling. I focus on building foundational skills in a way that makes reading feel more accessible and less overwhelming, so that over time, students move from effortful decoding to greater ease and independence. I also want them to see that reading isn’t just a skill to master, but a doorway into the things they care about, so they can access their interests, ideas, and opportunities more freely.
Your teaching style, personality?
I believe that while there are common characteristics associated with dyslexia, no two dyslexic students present in exactly the same way. Each student brings a unique profile of strengths and challenges, and my goal is to meet students where they are by providing instruction that is relational, responsive, thoughtful, and grounded in how they learn best.
Any family details?
I’m a proud aunt, sister, and daughter who loves spending time with family and friends. I also enjoy reading, cooking, camping, and traveling whenever I get the chance.
