Teaching Experience

My passion for teaching reading began in a first-grade classroom, where I had the incredible experience of helping children learn to read for the very first time. Watching a student enter my class as a non-reader and leave with newfound confidence as a reader was truly rewarding and confirmed my calling as an educator. Over the years, I have served in various roles from classroom teacher to instructional specialist. For the past 13 years, I worked as a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), supporting students from elementary through high school in developing strong reading and language skills.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I found my inspiration while supporting my daughter who has dyslexia. Protecting her self-esteem was my top priority, so I dedicated myself to learning everything I could about dyslexia to ensure she wouldn’t fall behind in reading. Since then, I’ve been committed to helping students grow as confident readers and giving them the tools to navigate a world where reading opens doors to opportunity.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

I love watching my students grow in confidence as we work together, but the best moments are when they finally recognize their own progress. I’ll never forget one student who used to see reading as “work.” It took a lot of encouragement to get him motivated to read to me, but one day, everything clicked. As he was reading, I asked if I could record him and send it to his mom — I was so proud and wanted to celebrate his progress! To my surprise, he said yes. For many students with dyslexia, reading is exhausting, so that moment with my student truly touched my heart. Seeing his pride reminded me why I love what I do.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal is to help your child become a confident, successful reader — and to share my love of reading so they can discover the power it brings.

Your teaching style, personality?

I am patient and encouraging. I focus on building confidence, making reading enjoyable, and helping students feel proud of their progress.

Any family details?

My husband and I love traveling and being outdoors, and our dog Bear is usually along for the adventure! He loves long walks and even camping in our RV. I’m also a proud mom of three grown kids — all independent now, with my youngest still in college. They make me so proud every day!
