Teaching Experience

I taught for 31 years in Texas public schools before retiring in 2024. I taught second and fourth grades for the first half of my career, and worked with dyslexia students in the elementary setting for the last fifteen years. Through dyslexia therapy, I was able to work with students from K-5.

Age Range You Feel Most Comfortable With:
Elementary is where my experience is, but any age student is okay with me. I just want to make a difference.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I was an avid reader as a child (still am) and it was frustrating to see students struggle with reading. Most of my classroom teaching career was in fourth grade, so by the time struggling readers came to me, they had learned many coping strategies but hated to read. I wanted to be part of the solution to change that. Fortunately, I can use my skills as a CALT even after retirement.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

One of my favorite moments was with a group of fifth graders many years ago. Their reading skills had gotten so good that they actually wanted to discuss books they were reading. In particular, they were all into Greek Mythology and Rick Riordan’s books. I always told my students that I may never teach them to love reading like I did, but I would send them to middle school being able to read and keep up in their classes. This group actually was able to see the joy in reading once they were able to decode. It was a special moment.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal when working with students is to teach them the skills necessary in order to be successful in the classroom. I want them to be confident in their reading and writing skills and be able to apply them to all content areas.

Your teaching style, personality?

I am a laid back person, but am all about getting the work accomplished. I love to laugh and joke with students, but can also be focused on the lessons. I believe in kindness and try to impart that to the students I teach. You can do the hard work and have fun too. That is what I strive to do with students.

Any family details?

I am an aunt and a dog mom who loves to travel.
