Teaching Experience

In addition to my one year of teaching Take Flight at the elementary level, I have been a reading specialist for 19 years. I have also taught grades K-4 in the classroom. The majority of my experience has been teaching struggling readers in a small group setting. I have also provided reading instructional methods training to staff at the site and district level. In addition to my in-person teaching experience, I have taught English on-line for the last 6 years. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Early-Middle Child, Literacy Reading-Language Arts.

Age Range You Feel Most Comfortable With:
I am most comfortable with elementary to middle school students, but I am happy to teach students of all ages.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

After using the research based methods that have evolved over the last 20 years, I noticed a significant amount of my students were not making progress. I was introduced to some multi-sensory alphabet and spelling routines, and I quickly noticed the benefit to my students. As soon as I had the opportunity to participate in Take Flight training, I jumped on it! As I have implemented Take Flight with my students, I have been in awe of the growth they’ve made. It is, by far, the most effective and exciting change I have made in my teaching career.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moment was when one of my students said, “I can do it! Look Mrs. Aker, I spelled it right!” I also LOVE to see the confidence building in each student, and the joy they show when they come to class. These are the same students that used to cringe at the thought of coming to reading class, and would often try to hide. Watching them change has been a career high for me.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal is for them to become confident in their ability to read, and to ENJOY it! I want them to be comfortable with reading and writing, and to have a positive self image. I want them to LOVE reading, and to know that they can achieve big goals in life.

Your teaching style, personality?

I work very hard to build positive relationships with my students. I make time to ask questions to learn about each student’s interests, and to connect with them. I give encouragement and positive feedback. I celebrate every success, and make sure that students are comfortable to ask questions or to ask me to adjust my pace. I also make it fun and engaging, while making the most of every minute.

Any family details?

I am married, and have a precious dog, Most of my time is spent with my husband. our dog, and my mom.

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

I love to travel, especially to Disney destinations. Some of my more adventurous trips have been to Japan and Egypt. I love animals, so I hope to go on a safari in Africa someday!
