Teaching Experience

I began my career in teaching in special education in 2001. At that time, I was teaching a life skills classroom for Dallas ISD. From there I moved into a resource environment in Forney ISD, Rockwall ISD and Lovejoy ISD, working mainly with students who spedific learning disabilities in reading. Working is special education really exposed me to the need of young students who were struggling to read and not recieving adequate instruction to promote their learning styles and growth.

Age Range You Feel Most Comfortable With:
I am comfortable and experienced in working with students from grades 2 through high school.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I became a CALT because I love working with dyslexic students. Watching progress, monitoring growth and seeing self esteem blossom is tremenously rewarding. My own son has encountered reading challenges and has made significant growth due to dedicated professionals. It is my honor to pay forward the efforts given to him by amazing teachers and therapists.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moment in working with dyslexic students is seeing triumphant looks when they have gained progress in skills they had formerly doubted or just didn’t think they had. I enjoy building my students up and letting them feel seen, validated and nurtured through the learning process.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal in working with students with dyslexia is take into account all aspects of the students personality and needs and then design instruction that fits this individual, fostering growth and progress. I also feel that building rapport is an essential component. They should feel comfortable and trusting with their therapist. I believe in promoting unconditional positive regard with every student I work with. When all of this occurs, the groundwork for learning is set.

Your teaching style, personality?

I believe in building relationships with my students and will frequently engage in small talk at the beginning of each lesson. I like to start wherever the student is at in terms of learning with lots of patience, kindness and yet have good structure within the learning sessions.

Any family details?

I live in Rockwall, Texas and have 2 teenage boys in high school. I have 3 dogs who are all rescued and I work with a local rescue group for dogs and am passionate about helping animals find a better outcome then ending up in a shelter.
