Teaching Experience

I began teaching in 2000 and soon realized I needed more knowledge and resources to help my students become successful readers. I graduated in 2004 with my M.A. in Reading and began my current pursuit of an M.A.T. Dyslexia Specialist in 2022. I became specifically interested in working with struggling readers when looping with a group of students and knowing how incredibly smart and talented they are, but the expected reading progress wasn’t present. I’ve worked with grades 1-8 and enjoy watching students become confident and capable learners.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

Having the knowledge and skills to help readers achieve their goals is fundamental to my success as an educator. I have always been a curious person and an avid reader, and love learning new information that will allow me to support others in their pursuit of learning how to, and enjoying the act of, reading and literacy in general.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

Last year while teaching 2nd grade, I incorporated Take Flight decoding methods into our curricular program’s daily routine of decoding. The growth I saw throughout the year was incredible and my students, especially those identified as having specific learning disabilities, were so excited to feel and be seen as readers.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My utmost goal is for students to feel proud of their achievements and growth and to know they are the ones making it happen with their effort, focus, and support from a trained and knowledgeable professional.

Your teaching style, personality?

I thrive best in situations where there is a routine and predictability. Because of this, I like to keep a routine for students so they can focus on their learning and relationship-building. I’m also interested in analyzing situations and will use that data to problem-solve or celebrate.

Any family details?

I have three children, all of whom are currently in high school. My husband is a science teacher at an area high school. We enjoy spending time together with our dog, Millie.

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

All children are capable of learning and succeeding. It’s up to me to meet them where they are and support them in their journey of growth.
