Teaching Experience

I have had the pleasure over the past 20 years to get to work with kids in a number of areas. I have taught 4th grade in a self-contained classroom, teaching all subjects as well as 4th grade Math and Science. In addition, I have taught English Language Arts to ESL and Bilingual students K-6th grade. For the last four years I have worked exclusively with students identified with Dyslexia ranging in age from 1st-11th grades.

Age Range You Feel Most Comfortable With:
I enjoy working with students of all ages.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I originally became a CALT to provide one of my children with Dyslexia therapy when we moved to a state that did not provide therapy. I saw first-hand what a difference Dyslexia therapy made in his life. Then when we moved back to Texas, I got the opportunity to work with students identified with Dyslexia full time.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

I absolutely love it when students discover that they CAN read and how intelligent they are. I enjoy seeing their eyes light up when concepts click, especially concepts they have had difficulty with. I love seeing students become confident in themselves.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal in working with children with Dyslexia is to help them build confidence and realize their intelligence. I want them to internalize the concepts we learn until those skills become automatic. Developing strong skills that are used automatically will increase reading fluency, in turn improving reading comprehension and spelling, which will allow them to learn with greater confidence in all subjects. I want my students to also know they can do hard things and that they are capable and smart.

Your teaching style, personality?

I am very flexible when it comes to teaching and always want to adjust to my students’ needs. It’s important for me to build relationships with my students so they feel comfortable to make mistakes and try new things.

Any family details?

I am married and have a blended family with six beautiful children, three of whom are Dyslexic. I also have three dogs, three cats and a bunch of chickens!

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

Learning is a lifelong adventure!
