Why did you decide to become a CALT?

My journey to becoming a CALT began in the heart of the classroom.
I watched bright, capable students lose confidence—not because they weren’t trying, but because traditional teaching methods didn’t meet their needs. I knew they were smart. They just needed a different kind of instruction.
I was fortunate that my school district provided the opportunity to train through the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children—a leader in dyslexia intervention. There, I learned how to support students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences using proven, structured, multisensory approaches. More than anything, I learned how to help students rediscover their confidence—not just improve their reading. Now, I’m not just teaching—I’m reaching students in ways that truly work.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

One of my favorite moments happened with a student who used to avoid reading altogether. Every time we started class, she would sigh and say, “I’m just not good at reading.” But over time, with encouragement and structured support, things began to shift. One day, she read an entire page on her own—slowly, steadily, and accurately. When she finished, she looked up at me with a mix of surprise and pride and said, “I didn’t think I could ever do that.”
That moment is one I’ll always carry with me.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal is to provide structured, compassionate instruction that helps students become confident, independent readers.
I strive to create a welcoming environment where students feel safe, supported, and free to learn at their own pace.

Your teaching style, personality?

My teaching style is calm, patient, and soft-spoken. Every lesson is built on trust, encouragement, and celebrating growth—one small success at a time.

Any family details?

Outside the classroom, I enjoy fishing, camping, and exploring the natural beauty of Arkansas—known as the Natural State.
I share my home with my husband and Charlie, our loving tuxedo cat rescued from a local shelter. Charlie often keeps me company by sleeping at my desk while I work.
