Why did you decide to become a CALT?

As a classroom teacher, what I enjoyed most was working with students in small groups or one-on-one. It allowed me to truly get to know them and better understand their struggles. I developed a particular interest in helping students who struggled with reading, but at the time, I wasn’t sure how to best support them. This curiosity led me to research and observe the dyslexia therapy classes on my campus. I was amazed by how effective the therapy was and how much progress those students made over the course of the year. It became clear to me that pursuing certification as a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) was the next step in my journey. I’m truly passionate about what I do and love making a difference in my students’ lives!

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moments when working with dyslexic students are when they understand the “why” behind their learning. Once they connect or relate to what is being taught, it’s like a light bulb goes on! It’s their “Ah-ha” moment. I also love to see their self-confidence grow as they move through the program. What an amazing moment it is when a student volunteers to read aloud or help other struggling students. I will never forget the look of empowerment and joy on their faces.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

When working with my students, I have several key goals in mind. First, as a therapist, I aim to focus on the positives and minimize the negative aspects. Second, I strive to provide strong support while encouraging students to take ownership of their own learning process. My third goal is to foster a growth mindset, emphasizing the importance of the journey and the steps involved in achieving progress, rather than just focusing on the end result. The core of a growth mindset is about learning and continuous improvement. Lastly, I aim to promote self-advocacy, encouraging students to seek solutions and ask for help when needed, rather than simply struggling in silence with their challenges.

Your teaching style, personality?

I try to create a classroom that is a safe place for my students. I also strive to be a teacher that is structured, friendly, creative, fun, compassionate, encouraging, and patient.

Any family details?

I have been married to my wonderful husband, Christopher, for 29 years. We have 2 children, Lucas & Lily. Lucas is 23 and studying to be an engineer at Collin College. Lily is 20 and in nursing school at Texas Tech University. We also have fur babies. We have a Golden Retriever named Ella and 2 kitties named Kitty and Big Kitty! I love college football, playing games, cooking and baking, reading, traveling, and spending time with my family!
