Teaching Experience

After graduating from the University of Arkansas, I began teaching fourth grade English Language Arts in Frisco, Texas. I taught fourth grade for two years before moving up to fifth grade English Language Arts. I spent two years teaching fifth grade and made the decision to pursue my long term goal of completing a CALT certification program. I am completing my first year in training while working as a Dyslexia Specialist delivering the Take Flight Curriculum.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

Becoming a Certified Academic Language Therapist has always been of interest to me. I completed a Dyslexia Specialization during my undergraduate years and gained practical experience to apply to struggling readers in the elementary classroom. However, over the years I always had a special place in my heart for the students in my class with Dyslexia. As I began to learn more about the Dyslexic brain and see first hand the application of their skills from therapy in the classroom, my goal of becoming a CALT was solidified.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moments are when students see their progress! The confidence boost that occurs when students see the result of their hard work is priceless!

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My ultimate goal when working with students with Dyslexia is to instill confidence in themselves while delivering evidence based curriculum. This combination ensures a strong balance between social/emotional and academic support.

Your teaching style, personality?

My teaching style is rooted in relationship building. It is important to me that my students feel connected and comfortable working with me. While my students are held to a high expectation, I also love to celebrate growth and successes, both big and small!

Any family details?

In my spare time I love to spend time with my family, try new restaurants, and spend time in the sunshine. I am newly married and take any chance I get to visit extended family on the Gulf Coast!
