Why did you decide to become a CALT?

As dyslexia began to be more recognized in the school system, I felt underprepared as a general education teacher to support these students in the classroom. I knew I needed to learn more about dyslexia, how a dyslexic brain functions, and how best to support these students on their reading journey. The dyslexia therapist at my school encouraged me to apply for the Multisensory Teacher Training program through Mckinney Christian Academy. As soon as my training began, I knew this was exactly what I wanted to do; to learn all I can about dyslexia and about how best to serve and support dyslexic students.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moment working with dyslexic students is when they can’t wait to tell me about a book they are excited about reading. Many students come to me not enjoying reading at all. Reading is a chore for them, and a difficult one, at that. After being in therapy and experiencing success, they begin to open themselves up to the possibility that reading can be not only tolerable, but ENJOYABLE. Helping students find that joy; THAT is my favorite moment!

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal when working with kids with dyslexia is directly tied to my favorite moment. I want to unlock the joy of reading for my students. I want to help them understand their strengths, make achievable goals, experience success, and keep reaching for more. My goal is for every child to enjoy reading.

Your teaching style, personality?

I am very flexible. I believe every student learns differently and therefore instruction must be individualized. I am responsive to student needs and can shift my teaching in the moment to best accommodate and support them. I do not give up on students. Ever.

Any family details?

I am married with 4 kids, ranging from 8-18.

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

Learning is a lifelong process, so we might as well find joy in it!
