Why did you decide to become a CALT?

As a classroom teacher or parent, we all have the desire to do more for our kiddos. I knew there had to be a way to help my struggling readers and spellers. Then it happened! I had one of my students leaving the classroom every day to work with an amazing dyslexia teacher. This student would return to class and wanted to help others learn this unique way of reading and I let him. He was confident, happy, and self-motivated. I knew I had to be a part of that impactful teaching. I also knew this challenge was growing and I had to help. This was life changing for both of us. It’s been the best decision and I am truly blessed.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

I don’t have one particular moment, but I have a collection of happy memories. I love giving them tools and resources that build their confidence. I love giving them hope that they can achieve their dreams. Most of all my favorite memories are teaching them something new, that leads them to independence. Isn’t that what we all strive for with our own children?

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal is to be understanding, compassionate, and yet focused on my student’s individual needs.

Your teaching style, personality?

In a word, my teaching style is joyful! I want my students excited and charged with enthusiasm to learn. I want them to know they have my undivided attention and how important our time is together.

Any family details?

I have a wonderful family. My husband is a veteran of the Army and stays busy running our family business. My stepson is currently serving in the Army and my daughter is an Author. Her first novel, “Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet,” was a Pura Belpre 2022 Young Adult Author Honor Book. Reading is a passion on our family.
