Teaching Experience

I have four years experience in the regular classroom and four years as a dyslexia therapist for the district. I then moved to be the 504/Dyslexia coordinator for the district for six years. In 2019, I became the Dean of Adult and Continuing Education at our local community college, where I coordinated and ran the GED program and workforce education. During this time I also taught reading and GED classes at the women’s correctional facility. In 2021, I started working at the local Education Service Center where I train teachers to teach reading and dyslexia programs.

Age Range You Feel Most Comfortable With:
I feel comfortable teaching all ages.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

During my course work to become a reading specialist, I participated in a dyslexia simulation. It changed my mind about how to teach and I immediately wanted to call and apologize to me former students. I started my training immediately after that. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself and my students.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

I love when the student realizes they are reading fluently. They struggle so much of the time and find reading to be a chore, but when it becomes effortless, they surprise themselves.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

I love making connections with my students. Dyslexia therapy is a long term partnership where my students become like family. I believe in setting goals with the students and formulate a plan on how to achieve that goal.

Your teaching style, personality?

When working with students with dyslexia, I have a patient, empathetic, and flexible teaching style. I am willing to adapt teaching methods to individual needs and focus on building self-esteem, providing explicit instructions, and using multisensory approaches.

Any family details?

I am married, have two adult married daughters and one grandson.

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

How I feel about working with people who struggle to reading…

When you love what you do, then you’re talking to one of the luckiest guys on the face of the earth.
