I have taught Pre-Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 4th grade, in addition, I’ve been the Instructional Specialist. As the Dyslexia Therapist at my elementary school, and (as a mom, who has a kind and super smart son with dyslexia) I can’t help but think this is exactly where I’m supposed to be.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

I decided to become a Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT) out of a desire to help children with dyslexia. I have a passion for education, a desire to make a positive impact on my students’ lives, and a personal experience with dyslexia (as my son was 7 when he was diagnosed with dyslexia).

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

My favorite moment is witnessing the progress and success of my students with dyslexia as they develop effective strategies to overcome reading and writing challenges. Celebrating victories, such as increased confidence and improved reading is incredibly rewarding for both the students and me!
Ultimately, the joy in working with students with dyslexia often comes from seeing their resilience, growth, and achievements in the face of challenges.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My primary goal when working with children with dyslexia is to support their learning and development in a way that accommodates their unique needs. Some goals include:
*Helping students enhance their reading and writing abilities by employing targeted interventions and evidence-based instructional methods.
*Fostering a positive learning environment that encourages students to feel confident in their abilities and recognize their strengths.
*Promoting a growth mindset by emphasizing that intelligence and abilities can be developed through dedication, hard work, and effective strategies.

Your teaching style, personality?

Building strong relationships, and incorporating humor contribute to a successful and enjoyable learning environment. I seek to understand my students, create a positive atmosphere, and adapt my style to engage my students while facilitating meaningful learning experiences.

Any family details?

I live in Allen with my 17-year-old daughter (Madison), my 11-year-old son (Aiden), and my 8-year old Maltipoo (Kobe).

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

While working in my previous career as a training coordinator, I spent six months in India! Additionally, I was the Teacher of the year for the 2015-2016 school year.
