Teaching Experience

Started my career with Los Angeles Unified School District in 1985 as an elementary school teacher. I taught K-5th grade. Although, I taught all subjects, reading was my favorite subject. After 20 years in the classroom , I pursued a position as a Magnet school coordinator in a K-8th grade school. In that capacity, I was the special education administrator, organized all campus activities, managed the magnet program and worked closely with students, staff and parents. In 2012, I moved to Fort Worth, Texas where I became a reading interventionist. In 2019, I received my CALT certification and currently I am a dyslexia therapist for Eagle Mountain Saginaw School District.

Why did you decide to become a CALT?

When I moved to Texas, I became a reading interventionist. Along with teaching reading to Tier 3 students, I also taught students with dyslexia. I quickly realized that I needed to know more about the students I worked with, so I challenged myself to learn more about dyslexia. I attended a seminar at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. After the seminar, I knew that this was my calling. I found a great training program and obtained my CALT. Motivating and challenging this special group of students gives me the greatest joy.

Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?

When my students realize that they can read and overcome the feeling of defeat. I call it “The AHA moment”. The look on their faces and the change in their attitude is priceless. It warms my heart and soul.

Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?

My goal is to continue to use my expertise and experience in teaching to motivate students with dyslexia and other related disorders.

Your teaching style, personality?

I am very flexible and easy going, however, I am all about making sure that teaching/learning experience is our first priority.

Any family details?

I am married to a wonderful man, Kevin. We have a blended family of 5 grown children. We have 1 grandson, 4 and one grandchild on the way.

Any extra anecdotal info you want to add?

My personal and professional philosophy is that we are all life-long learners.
