

The Science of Reading is a body of research that explains how the brain learns to read and which instructional practices consistently produce the strongest reading outcomes. For children with dyslexia, this research shows that explicit, systematic, and structured literacy instruction is not simply beneficial. It is essential for developing accurate, fluent, and confident readers.
For decades, educators debated the best way to teach children to read.
Should instruction focus primarily on phonics? Should children learn naturally through exposure to books? Is comprehension more important than decoding? Should literacy instruction balance multiple teaching philosophies?
Today, thanks to decades of research in cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and education, we no longer have to rely on opinion.
We have science.
That body of evidence is known as the Science of Reading, and it has transformed our understanding of how the brain learns to read.
Unfortunately, understanding the Science of Reading and implementing it consistently are two very different things.
Many schools have adopted the language of the Science of Reading. Yet countless children continue to struggle because high-quality Structured Literacy instruction remains inconsistent. Some students receive excellent instruction. Others continue to be taught using approaches that are not aligned with decades of reading research.
For children with dyslexia, those differences matter tremendously.
When reading instruction matches how the brain actually learns to read, students are far more likely to become successful readers. When it does not, children who could have become confident readers often begin falling behind long before anyone realizes there is a problem.
The Science of Reading is not a curriculum, a reading program, or a new educational trend. It is a large body of interdisciplinary research that explains how children learn to read and identifies the instructional practices that consistently lead to successful reading outcomes.
One of the most common questions parents ask is, “What is the Science of Reading?”
The answer is simpler than many people expect.
The Science of Reading combines more than fifty years of research from neuroscience, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, speech and language sciences, linguistics, and education.
Together, these fields have taught us something incredibly important.
Reading is not a natural process.
Unlike spoken language, which most children acquire naturally through conversation and exposure, reading must be explicitly taught.
The human brain was not designed specifically for reading. Instead, it creates new neural pathways that connect speech sounds, letters, words, meaning, memory, and language into an efficient reading network.
When instruction follows the way the brain naturally develops those pathways, reading becomes increasingly accurate, fluent, and automatic.
When instruction does not, many children struggle unnecessarily.
The Science of Reading shows that effective reading instruction is explicit, systematic, cumulative, diagnostic, and responsive to student progress. Children learn best when reading skills are taught directly, practiced consistently, and built upon over time.
Research consistently shows that students benefit from explicit instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, spelling, and written language. These skills should not be taught in isolation. Instead, they should be intentionally connected throughout instruction.
This instructional approach is known as Structured Literacy.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Structured Literacy is that it simply means “more phonics.”
It is much more comprehensive than that.
Structured Literacy teaches children how written language actually works. Skills are introduced in a carefully planned sequence, with each new concept building on skills that have already been explicitly taught and practiced.
Nothing is assumed, and nothing is left to chance.
Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach to reading instruction that teaches language in a logical sequence. Students build strong reading skills by mastering one concept before moving to the next, allowing new learning to build on a solid foundation.
One of my favorite ways to explain Structured Literacy is by comparing it to building a house.
You would never expect a builder to install the roof before pouring the foundation. You would also never begin building the house on the second floor.
Reading works the same way.
Children first develop awareness of speech sounds. They learn how those sounds connect to letters. They begin blending and segmenting words. They master simple spelling patterns before moving to more complex ones. Later, they learn syllable types, morphology, prefixes, suffixes, roots, sentence structure, and increasingly sophisticated language concepts.
Every lesson builds on previous learning.
That carefully planned sequence is one of the reasons Structured Literacy is so effective for students with dyslexia. This sequence is the same principle behind the Orton-Gillingham approach, which delivers structured literacy through a defined, multisensory method.
Decodable texts allow students to successfully apply the reading skills they have already been taught. Instead of guessing at unfamiliar words, children practice accurate decoding using spelling patterns they already know, helping to build automatic, confident reading.
For example, imagine a child has learned to read short-vowel consonant-vowel-consonant words such as cat, sit, and hop.
The passages that child reads should contain almost entirely those same spelling patterns.
The text is intentionally written so the student can successfully apply previously learned skills rather than relying on memorization or guessing.
As students master new phonics concepts, the reading material gradually becomes more complex.
Nothing appears unexpectedly.
Students are never expected to figure out words using strategies they have not yet been taught.
This is one of the defining characteristics of Structured Literacy.
Children become successful readers by repeatedly applying the skills they have learned until those skills become automatic.
The Science of Reading teaches children to decode words accurately through explicit instruction. Balanced Literacy often encouraged students to identify unfamiliar words using pictures, context clues, or guessing. Research shows that skilled readers rely on automatic word recognition rather than guessing strategies.
Many adults reading this article learned under instructional approaches known as Whole Language or Balanced Literacy.
While these philosophies differed in some ways, both often placed greater emphasis on authentic literature, meaning-making, and using context to identify unfamiliar words than on systematically teaching how written language works.
Balanced Literacy became especially widespread throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Although many schools are now transitioning toward Structured Literacy, Balanced Literacy continues to influence instruction in classrooms across the country.
One hallmark of Balanced Literacy was encouraging children to use multiple “cueing systems” when they encountered an unfamiliar word.
Students were often taught to look at the picture, read the rest of the sentence, think about what word would make sense, use the first letter as a clue, or rely on context to identify the word.
The problem is that proficient readers do not actually read this way.
Research using eye-tracking technology and brain imaging consistently shows that skilled readers recognize words rapidly by connecting letters to sounds and automatically retrieving them from memory after repeated successful decoding.
They are not continually guessing from context.
Ironically, many of the strategies promoted through Balanced Literacy closely resemble the compensatory strategies children with dyslexia naturally develop when decoding is difficult.
Children with dyslexia often rely on pictures, memorization, sentence context, and educated guessing because accurate word decoding is challenging.
In other words, Balanced Literacy frequently asks beginning readers to depend on the very strategies struggling readers adopt out of necessity.
Structured Literacy takes the opposite approach.
Rather than teaching children to compensate for reading difficulties, it teaches them the skills needed to decode words accurately and automatically.
Guessing becomes unnecessary because the child has been explicitly taught how to read the word.
One of the most important findings from reading research is that structured literacy benefits far more students than those with dyslexia. Research suggests that approximately 60 percent of beginning readers benefit from explicit, systematic structured literacy instruction, even if they do not have dyslexia.
That statistic surprises many parents. They often assume structured literacy was developed exclusively for children with diagnosed reading disabilities. In reality, it represents high-quality first instruction for nearly every beginning reader.
Many students who struggle in kindergarten and first grade are not dyslexic. They simply have not received sufficiently explicit reading instruction. Imagine if every child entered kindergarten and immediately received high-quality structured literacy taught with fidelity by well-prepared educators. Many students who currently require reading intervention would likely become successful readers through classroom instruction alone.
This carries a second benefit that is easy to miss. When every child receives excellent reading instruction and a student still demonstrates significant difficulty, educators gain much clearer evidence that the challenge is not simply ineffective teaching. It points instead to a genuine learning difference that requires specialized intervention.
In other words, better classroom instruction helps everyone. It allows many struggling readers to succeed while making it far easier to identify the children who truly need intensive dyslexia intervention. We should never identify a child with dyslexia simply because they were not taught to read effectively in the first place. Although structured literacy benefits most beginning readers, children with dyslexia require something even more specific. A simple way to express it is structured literacy delivered in a multisensory modality at high repetition.
Students with dyslexia typically need more opportunities for repetition, cumulative review, diagnostic teaching, and direct instruction than their peers. The exact number of repetitions and the pacing are different for every dyslexia profile. They also benefit from engaging multiple sensory pathways during instruction. Multisensory teaching intentionally connects visual, auditory, verbal, and kinesthetic learning so students are simultaneously seeing, hearing, saying, and doing. This strengthens learning while building accurate neural pathways for reading and spelling.
Delivering this well requires an even greater level of expertise than whole-class instruction. That is one reason professionals such as Certified Academic Language Therapists complete hundreds of hours of advanced training focused specifically on language structure, diagnostic teaching, multisensory instruction, assessment, and intervention. This is not because classroom teachers are less capable. It is because the needs of students with dyslexia are often significantly more complex. Just as we would not expect every classroom teacher to provide speech therapy or occupational therapy, intensive dyslexia intervention requires specialized knowledge and clinical decision-making beyond general classroom instruction.
Strong classroom teaching and specialized intervention are not competing ideas. They are complementary pieces of the same solution.
One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding the Science of Reading is that schools simply need to purchase a “Science of Reading curriculum.” If only it were that simple.
The Science of Reading is research. Structured literacy is the instructional framework informed by that research. Curricula are tools that may or may not reflect those principles. A program can borrow elements of structured literacy without embracing the instructional principles that make it effective.
This matters because a curriculum is only as effective as the educator delivering it. Imagine handing someone the world’s greatest cookbook. Owning the cookbook does not automatically make them an exceptional chef. Teaching reading works the same way. Effective literacy instruction requires deep knowledge of phonological awareness, phonics, orthography, morphology, syntax, semantics, language development, reading acquisition, and diagnostic teaching, along with an understanding of how all of those pieces fit together as children learn to read.
The most successful reading teachers are constantly observing student responses, identifying misunderstandings, adjusting instruction, and making informed decisions throughout every lesson. That level of expertise cannot be captured in a script.
As the Science of Reading has gained national attention, publishers have responded quickly.
Unfortunately, not all of those responses have reflected the research.
Today, it is common to see reading programs advertised as:
These phrases sound reassuring.
However, they do not necessarily mean a program provides true Structured Literacy instruction.
Parents and educators should recognize that marketing language and instructional fidelity are not the same thing.
A curriculum can borrow elements of Structured Literacy without fully embracing the instructional principles that make it effective.
True Structured Literacy is explicit.
It is systematic.
It is cumulative.
It is diagnostic.
It is sequential.
It is language-based.
It continually builds upon previously mastered skills while adjusting instruction based on ongoing student performance.
Those qualities cannot be captured simply by adding more phonics lessons to an existing curriculum.
The Science of Reading is far too comprehensive for that.
Choosing between programs is difficult, which is why it helps to know what to look for in a dyslexia curriculum before committing to one.
One part of this conversation is often overlooked. We spend enormous amounts of time discussing reading curricula and far less preparing the people who teach them.
For decades, many elementary education programs devoted surprisingly little time to the actual science of how children learn to read. Some future teachers graduated after only a small amount of coursework in literacy instruction, with limited preparation in phonology, orthography, language structure, or the principles of structured literacy. As a result, many outstanding educators entered classrooms without ever being taught the research we now know is essential. That is not a criticism of teachers. It is a challenge to the systems that prepared them.
Reading is the foundation of nearly every academic subject students encounter. If children do not learn to read proficiently, every other subject becomes more difficult. That is why structured literacy should be an essential component of every elementary education program, not a single chapter within one methods course. Future teachers deserve substantial coursework that helps them understand how reading develops, why some children struggle, how dyslexia affects learning, and how to deliver evidence-based instruction with confidence.
Across the country, more educators are now participating in Science of Reading training for the first time, which is an encouraging step. It is worth recognizing that not all training is equal. A one-day workshop cannot replace months or years of studying language structure, literacy development, assessment, and diagnostic teaching, and reading a teacher’s manual does not create expertise. Becoming an exceptional reading teacher requires ongoing learning, coaching, practice, and reflection. The encouraging news is that more universities, districts, and state education agencies are beginning to strengthen teacher preparation around evidence-based literacy instruction.
If your child’s school tells you they are using the Science of Reading, that is wonderful.
The next question is equally important.
How is it being implemented?
Parents might consider asking questions such as:
Is reading instruction explicit and systematic?
Are students directly taught phonological awareness, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension?
Are lessons cumulative, with regular review of previously learned concepts?
How are struggling readers identified and supported?
What additional intervention is available for students with dyslexia?
How are teachers trained in Structured Literacy?
These conversations are not about criticizing schools.
They are about understanding whether the instruction children receive truly reflects what decades of research have shown to be effective.
For too long, conversations about struggling readers have focused almost exclusively on the students.
We have asked why children struggle.
The Science of Reading encourages us to ask a different question.
Are we consistently teaching reading in the way the brain actually learns?
When we provide explicit, systematic, evidence-based Structured Literacy from the very beginning of school, more children become successful readers.
When students with dyslexia receive that same instruction delivered intensively and multisensorily by highly trained professionals, they have the opportunity to build the neural pathways that support accurate, fluent reading.
Reading success should never depend on luck.
It should not depend on whether a child happens to have a teacher who independently sought additional literacy training, or on whether a district happened to purchase the right curriculum.
Every child deserves instruction grounded in decades of scientific research.
The Science of Reading has already given us the roadmap.
Now our responsibility is to ensure that roadmap is implemented with fidelity, expertise, and a commitment to every child who enters a classroom.
That is how we change reading outcomes.
That is how we change lives.
Is the Science of Reading a curriculum I can buy?
No. The Science of Reading is a body of research, not a product. Structured literacy is the instructional approach based on that research, and individual curricula may or may not follow it faithfully, regardless of how they are marketed.
Is the Science of Reading just phonics?
No. Phonics is one part of it. The research also covers phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and written language, taught in a connected and systematic sequence rather than in isolation.
My child’s school says it uses the Science of Reading. Is that enough?
Not on its own. What matters is how instruction is delivered. Ask whether it is explicit, systematic, and cumulative, and how the school identifies and supports children who continue to struggle.
Does the Science of Reading work for children who do not have dyslexia?
Yes. Research indicates most beginning readers benefit from explicit, systematic instruction. Strong classroom instruction helps the majority of students and makes it easier to identify the children who need specialized dyslexia intervention.
