Why did you decide to become a CALT?
When I was teaching 4th grade, I had the privilege of having several students with dyslexia in my class every year. Every one of these bright, articulate, inquisitive children sparked a passion and desire in my heart to learn all I could to help them in the classroom.
Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?
As Dyslexia Therapists, we are the lucky ones because we get to see the switch-when things start coming together-and there isn’t usually one big moment, it’s lots of little lightbulbs throughout our time doing therapy. It’s a joy to get to be a part in that!
Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?
Of course, watching them become confident and competent readers is my most immediate goal, however, dyslexia impacts so much more than just a child’s ability to read. Many times they struggle with the social emotional effects of it as well, and sometimes those can be more debilitating than the academic effects. I always make sure to remind my students of their strengths throughout each and every lesson.
Your teaching style, personality?
I build relationships first and foremost; while showing compassion and having patience.
