Why did you decide to become a CALT?
My sister is dyslexic and always struggled in school. I saw the way she was treated and I wanted to change our system. The Take Flight Program works for my students. I love watching them grow and succeed. I feel like I am making a difference with students!
Favorite moment working with dyslexic students?
Dyslexia does not limit the opportunity for success. It is important to encourage dyslexic students to have dreams and aspirations. When a child with dyslexia receives good instruction they need in the form of therapy, their feelings about school often change dramatically! Instead of dreading every school day, they start to enjoy school and understand that they can succeed there. I love to watch this process!
Your goal when working with kids with dyslexia?
All my students realize they learn differently and that’s okay. Everyone learns differently. No two brains are alike. The brain is made up of many different networks that help learning. Some people learn better by seeing, others learn better by hearing and still others need to do something in order to really learn new information. The Take Flight Program is multisensory program and works for most kids.
Your teaching style, personality?
I promote self-learning and help students develop critical thinking skills. They retain knowledge that leads to self-actualization. The Take Flight Program is based on the discovery of new learning using a multisensory approach.
Any family details?
I am married to a wonderful guy and we have 2 kids. I also have 3 dogs. One of my dogs is a trained therapy dog and works with kids.
